Another roof mounted light source that differs from a skylight is called a “Daylight Tube,” or “Sun-Tunnel” among other names. One of the reasons that daylight tubes are so popular is because of their relative ease and low cost of installation while providing a source of free, natural sun light to areas that previously had none. Some of the popular areas where daylight tubes are used are hallways, bathrooms and foyers to mention a few.
Daylight tubes are generally round and are available in “standard” sizes from approximately 8” to 14” and up to 21” for commercial applications. Some manufacturer’s give you the option to add a “ventilation kit” so you can also use your daylight tube as a ceiling fan or add an “electric light kit” and have your daylight tube “double” as a ceiling light for nigth time use.
Skylights are about light; clean, natural light and all of its transformative benefits.
Light is the simplest, most pure and invigorating element of design and construction that we have to work with and it’s free. When you incorporate light into your design and construction, you are utilizing an exceptionally powerful tool that can help you shape and transform any living space in your home or business.
Skylights can be small, large or huge and are available in “standard” and custom sizes. The majority of skylights are square or rectangular.

Round skylights are available as well as many custom shapes such as domes, pyramids and ridge-lights to name a few. In addition to letting light in, if you order an operable skylight, they are also a great way to let heat or steam out of a room. An operable skylight can be operated manually or electrically. Electrically operated skylights are generally designed with a rain sensor to close automatically if it starts raining. Some skylight manufacturer’s offer choices in shades and blinds some even offer a "Light Block" option if you want to block light out of a room to watch a movie or take a nap for intance. Most shades can be operated manually and electrically.
